A lounge in the loft

Mark and Caroline Hunter bought their house in Cheltenham three years ago and had baby Richard last summer.

"We didn’t fancy moving but we knew we needed more space," says Caroline.

Some new parents react immediately by getting on the phone to the estate agents as soon as a baby’s on the way. But we got on the phone to our architect and he suggested putting VELUX roof windows in the attic and freeing up a whole new floor of our existing home.

Then we converted our old bedroom into a nursery and turned the downstairs living room into an en-suite bedroom for ourselves - right next door to Richard and very handy for nocturnal baby-minding.

Meanwhile, what to do with the enormous new space we’d created upstairs? A new sofa, some bookcases a plasma screen TV and, lo and behold, we’ve got a fabulous new lounge!

"We’ve added thousands of pounds to the value of the house - and when we do finally decide to move on we could realise quite a healthy profit."
