A Mum up above

"Mum came back home from Canada after Dad died and she wanted to settle near me and Steve and her grandchildren," says Margaret Sinclair of Edinburgh.

"Property up here isn’t cheap so we decided to make a lovely home for her right here in our own home.

Now, you might think it would easy enough to ﬁnd space in our largish house for one more family member - after all, the old nursery is doing nothing now that Tom and Lily are heading for their teens - but we reckoned we could do better than that.

Steve spoke to an architect who explained that it would be easy enough to open up some room in the roof and provide a lovely bedroom and a bathroom plus a little kitchen area for Mum.
