A dining room on the side

Sometimes a three bedroom house just isn’t enough for mum and dad and two growing teenagers.

Mike and Judy Harris’ home in Welshpool, Powys, was beginning to feel cramped.

"The kitchen was too small to eat in," concedes Mike.

"We tended to eat our evening meals in front of the telly. after which John and Ceri would retreat to their rooms and bury themselves in computer games and marathon texting sessions.

It didn’t feel right for a family to live together this way.

Then Judy had a brainwave - let’s eat in the garden every night! At first I thought she was crazy, but then she said if we built an extension out over the lawn at the side of the house and installed some VELUX skylights in the roof we’d have a dining room for the whole family.

Now we sit down and eat in our dining room every night like a proper family, and when dinner’s cleared away, the kids do their homework together round the table."
