A cottage that became a stately home
Adam Wardle spent ten years training to be an architect whilst living in a sandstone cottage he had inherited in Staffordshire.
The more he learned about architecture, the more he came to realise that his little home had the potential to be much more than ... little.
In close collaboration with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, which required any building work to be in keeping with neighbouring properties, Adam set about extending. And extending. And extending some more. Now, he and his family are the proud inhabitants of one of the county’s most imaginative conversions.
"My wife Julia and I realised that, with an extension and a mezzanine floor, we could double the size of the property. So we went for it. And by putting VELUX roof windows above the extension and the mezzanine we brought the outside indoors – and the feeling of being bathed in natural light works wonders for the mood about the place."
